Stainless Steel Characteristics

Stainless steel is an alloy steel made by adding chromium and nickel to iron. It possesses excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance. Additionally, the chromium forms a passive film on the surface, which protects the interior. Stainless Steel also has a low thermal conductivity, meaning heat is not easily transmitted.

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance

  • Excellent Heat Resistance

  • Low Thermal and Electrical Conductivity

Stainless Steel Types

The crystal structure and properties of stainless steel change depending on the ratios of metals added during manufacturing and the heat treatment temperature. There are many types of stainless steel materials, which can be used for a wide range of applications such as misc. parts, building materials, and daily necessities/household goods.

  • Martensitic Stainless Steel(SUS403 , SUS410 , SUS416 , SUS420 , SUS440)

  • Ferritic Stainless Steel(SUS430 , SUS444)

  • Austenitic Stainless Steel(SUS303 , SUS304 , SUS310S , SUS316

  • Austenitic-Ferritic Stainless Steel(SUS329J1 , SUS329J3L , SUS329J4L

  • Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel(SUS630 , SUS631 , SUS660)

Stainless Steel Processing Methods

Our company is capable of machining  a large selection of stainless steel types/grades, and we are able to perform machining from plate and block shapes using machining centers, as well as from round bars using lathes. A key consideration point when processing stainless steel. Because stainless steel has low thermal conductivity, the heat generated during machining concentrates on the cutting tool, which shortens the tool’s lifespan. Austenitic stainless steel may experience work hardening during machining, causing an extreme increase in hardness.

  • CNC Machining (Milling, Turning /Lathe, Drilling, Grinding, EDM)

  • CNC Cutting  (Laser, Plasma, Waterjet)

  • 5-Axis and 3-Axis Milling as well as Lathe CNC Machining Capabilities Available In-House

Material Selection Key Points

Stainless steel is a material that is particularly prone to embrittlement caused by hydrogen penetration and chemical reactions within the steel, which can lead to a significant reduction in strength. Another key point to consider regarding embrittlement is that ferritic stainless steel tends to be more susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Additionally, due to stainless steel's low thermal conductivity, the wear on cutting tools is severe and work hardening may occur, which makes it a difficult-to-machine material. Compared to easily machinable materials such as aluminum alloys or brass, the machining costs are higher due to these factors.

  • Embrittlement can be caused by hydrogen, so it is important to take into consideration environmental factors and manufacturing processes when selecting the stainless steel type/grade.

  • Stainless steel is a difficult to machine material and machining time/cost tends to be higher than other commonly used  metals such as aluminum or brass.

Our Manufacturing Services

CNC Milling

CNC milling uses computer-controlled machining equipment to produce products from a solid block of material. There are a wide array of different cutting tools and machines available (3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis).

CNC Turning

CNC turning uses computer-controlled machining equipment to create cone or cylinder shaped parts. The workpiece is rotated against the cutting tool to create the desired shape and features.
