What You Need to Know About PBT

What You Need to Know About PBT

Characteristics of PBT

PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) is a crystalline thermoplastic with excellent dimensional stability and chemical resistance. Its low moisture absorption and low coefficient of thermal expansion make it easy to machine to tight tolerances, and its solid balance of performance and cost makes it a popular choice for both prototyping and production parts, particularly in the automotive industry.

While PBT is not self-extinguishing, it is inherently difficult to ignite. It also holds up well against organic solvents such as gasoline and oils over the long term.

Key Points

  • Excellent resistance to organic solvents

  • Excellent dimensional stability

  • Excellent wear resistance

  • Electrical insulation

Types of PBT

In addition to the standard grade, PBT is available in several specialty grades with enhanced performance characteristics.

  • Standard grade

  • Flame retardant grade

  • Conductive grade

  • High impact grade

  • Hydrolysis resistant grade

  • Glass fiber reinforced grade

Material Selection Notes

PBT has poor resistance to strong alkalis and can discolor or degrade on contact with them. Its glass transition temperature is relatively low at 40 to 60°C, making it a poor fit for high-temperature applications under load. PBT also contains ester groups in its molecular structure, which makes it prone to hydrolysis.

  • Poor resistance to strong alkalis

  • Low glass transition temperature

  • Prone to hydrolysis
