What is PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Properties, Resistance, and Applications
2025/11/6

What is PVC?
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a thermoplastic, amorphous (non-crystalline) plastic produced by polymerizing vinyl chloride. It is an inexpensive, highly versatile material and one of the five major general-purpose resins. In this article, "PVC" refers specifically to hard PVC, rather than the more flexible soft PVC.
Characteristics of PVC
Chemical Resistance
PVC provides excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, oils, and hydrogen sulfide found in wastewater. It also resists alcohols, though certain organic solvents, such as aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and esters, can damage it. This reactivity with some solvents allows for adhesive bonding and coating applications where solvent-based processes are used.
Weather and Corrosion Resistance
PVC has an extremely low water absorption rate of about 0.07%, making it highly resistant to moisture. It withstands ultraviolet degradation and weathering from rain, making it suitable for applications such as sewer pipes and building materials. PVC also maintains performance in acidic soils and can last long periods underground.
Electrical Insulation
PVC has strong electrical insulation properties, including high breakdown voltage and volume resistivity. Its high dielectric constant limits high-frequency insulation performance, but it supports high-frequency welding processes.
Heat Resistance
PVC has relatively low heat resistance, with a typical service temperature around 80°C. Exposure to higher temperatures can cause physical deterioration or deformation, while temperatures below -20°C may make it brittle and prone to impact breakage. PVC also has a high linear expansion rate, so careful consideration of dimensional changes with temperature is important.
Flame Retardancy
PVC is highly flame-resistant and difficult to ignite. When burned, it releases hydrogen chloride gas, and the resulting char layer protects the surface from oxygen, preventing further combustion.
Workability
PVC is highly workable and can be cut, machined, bent, and bonded with adhesives. Its compatibility with various processing methods makes it suitable for a wide range of manufacturing applications.
Key Takeaways
PVC is a cost-effective and versatile material with excellent chemical resistance, electrical insulation, and flame-retardant properties. Although it has low heat resistance, PVC can be machined, bent, and bonded, making it suitable for shaping into rails, frames, pipes, and other structural or industrial applications.
