What You Need to Know About PPS
2026/5/15
Key Takeaways
High Heat Resistance: PPS is a high-performance thermoplastic that maintains stability at continuous operating temperatures of up to 220°C (428°F).
Minimal Water Absorption: PPS features an incredibly low absorption rate of just 0.02% to 0.04% after a 24-hour water immersion test at 23°C.
Cost-Efficiency: PPS offers significant savings, typically costing less than half the price of PEEK for the same volume of material.
Features of PPS
PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) is a high-performance engineering plastic known for its exceptional heat resistance and mechanical strength. While its performance in dimensional stability, chemical resistance, and wear resistance is second only to PEEK, it is a much more budget-friendly alternative—generally costing between 25% and 50% of the price of PEEK for the same dimensions.
It has extremely low moisture absorption (0.02% after 24 hours at 23°C), is inherently flame-retardant, and produces very little gas during combustion. Additionally, its high weatherability makes it resistant to degradation even when used in outdoor environments.
High-performance resin (Performance comparable to PEEK)
Superior mechanical strength
Excellent heat resistance
Strong electrical insulation
Outstanding chemical resistance
Inherently flame-retardant
Excellent weather resistance
PPS Grades
Beyond the standard grade, PPS is available in various specialized formulations to enhance specific performance characteristics:
Standard Grade
Wear-Resistant Grade
Glass Fiber Reinforced Grade
Carbon Fiber Reinforced (Conductive) Grade
Considerations for Material Selection
While PPS is exceptionally hard, it is also brittle, making it prone to cracking or chipping during the machining process. It also tends to develop burrs easily. For parts requiring small holes, deburring internal sections can be labor-intensive, and some residual burrs may remain.
Brittleness: Prone to cracking and chipping.
Burr Formation: Frequent burrs during the cutting process.
