Improving Surface Finish and Reducing Debris with MC Nylon
2025/11/14
Background Information
A customer who manufactures thread spools had been using paper Bakelite components in their production equipment. Over time, these parts developed a rough surface that caused fine Bakelite dust to stick to the wound threads. Looking to improve surface quality and reduce contamination, the customer contacted us for a more reliable and cost-effective solution.
Problem Statement
Paper Bakelite typically has a smooth surface in its original sheet or rod form. However, once it’s machined to adjust the thickness, the layered structure can produce a rougher finish. This roughness not only caused dust to cling to the thread but also led to gradual wear from friction. While the issue could have been minimized by changing the machining process, that approach would have increased production costs and complexity.
Solution Implementation
After reviewing the part’s operating conditions, we determined that the component needed heat resistance above 100°C, strong tensile strength, and good sliding performance. Rather than modifying the process, we proposed switching to a different material—MC Nylon (monomer cast nylon). MC Nylon offers excellent wear resistance, low friction, and a smooth machined finish while maintaining the strength and heat resistance required for this application.
Results
By replacing paper Bakelite with MC Nylon, we achieved a much smoother surface finish, completely eliminating the dust adhesion problem. The new parts also showed reduced friction and slower wear, improving durability and reducing the need for maintenance or frequent replacement. With this simple material change, the customer achieved both better product quality and lower overall production costs.
