Yumoto Electric: A Next-Generation Factory Where Innovation Never Stops

Youthful Energy Brings A Breath of Fresh Air to Traditional Manufacturing

In Osaka’s Higashinari Ward, a sleek, glass-walled factory surrounded by greenery stands as a symbol of the “New Machikouba Project,” or, in other words, a next-generation manufacturing facility. This is Yumoto Electric, a precision machining company specializing in plastic and metal manufacturing—and redefining what a traditional factory can be.

Led by President Hideitsu Yumoto, the company operates with a startup spirit, constantly pursuing new challenges. With more than 15 new business initiatives running at any given time, Yumoto Electric has already launched ventures in the space industry, additive manufacturing, and overseas operations in Vietnam. And that’s not all. The company’s next frontiers include expanding into the United States and even exploring private lodging and agriculture.

“As a basic premise, work isn’t necessarily fun. And doing the same thing forever gets boring,” says Yumoto. “But when we create new businesses, spin them off, and add more leadership roles, our employees have new challenges to tackle. That keeps things fresh and motivates everyone.”

Under Yumoto’s leadership, the company’s sales and workforce have quadrupled in the past 15 years, with revenue growth for 11 consecutive fiscal years. Today, Yumoto Electric operates 18 machining centers across Japan and Vietnam, including advanced 5-axis and multi-tasking machines that handle complex parts for semiconductor and medical equipment manufacturers, as well as prototypes for universities.

By incorporating AI-driven quotation tools and drawing recognition systems, the company can respond to quote requests in as little as two hours, a speed that has become one of its strongest competitive advantages. With a growing team of young engineers, Yumoto Electric’s average employee age is just 33, a rarity in Japan’s manufacturing sector.

Many of the company’s core strengths, including its current quality control systems, actually originated from internal new-business projects. But Yumoto explains that the goal isn’t quick profit.

“Rather than focusing on profit, it’s more about training that helps employees build new skills. Successfully bringing something to fruition may eventually also lead to company growth. That's how I see it.”

Participation in these projects is voluntary. “Some take off, some don’t,” Yumoto says with a laugh. “But that’s part of the process.”

Expanding into the Aerospace Industry

Among its new ventures, Yumoto Electric is especially focused on the aerospace industry. “Traditional manufacturing is already mature and saturated,” Yumoto explains. “The biggest growth opportunities now lie in emerging fields that are still in early stages and can be nurtured.”

In Japan, the company has already produced numerous components for small satellite housings, and in Vietnam, it has secured participation in that country’s indigenous satellite project. Yumoto Electric is also planning to establish a base in Texas next fiscal year to strengthen ties with the U.S. space sector.

“The market is small and profitability is still difficult,” Yumoto admits. “But we see it as an investment in the future. One day, we want people to think, ‘When it comes to aerospace components, it’s got to be Yumoto Electric.’”

Expanding into the Agriculture Industry

Incidentally, the company’s interest in agriculture, mentioned at the beginning, may also sound unexpected, but Yumoto sees clear parallels. “Agriculture and manufacturing face similar challenges: low profitability, aging workforces, and a lack of successors. We’ve already overcome those issues in manufacturing, so we believe we can do the same in agriculture.”

If Yumoto Electric moves forward with this venture, it plans to apply its factory-based know-how to facility-managed farming, using robotics and image recognition to reduce labor and improve productivity.

“For the world to grow, each person and country should focus on what they do best,” Yumoto says. “Japan’s strength lies in precision manufacturing. The industry’s image might not be glamorous right now, but we want young people to see that factories like ours still exist and that manufacturing can be exciting again.”
