A Guide to CFRP CNC Machining

A Guide to CFRP CNC Machining

Last updated : 2026/7/13

Characteristics of CFRP

CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) is a laminated composite material made by combining lightweight, high-strength carbon fibers with a resin base.

Compared to glass fiber reinforced materials, CFRP offers superior heat resistance, hardness, rigidity, and dimensional stability, making it a strong candidate as a metal replacement. It sees use in electronics, satellites, and other precision components.

Strength varies depending on fiber orientation relative to the direction of applied load. Carbon fiber also gives CFRP inherent electrical conductivity.

  • Excellent mechanical strength

  • Excellent chemical resistance

  • Excellent heat resistance

  • Electrically conductive

  • Excellent dimensional stability

Types of CFRP

CFRP is available in versions based on a variety of resin systems.

Material Selection Notes

Because the carbon fibers are added primarily to improve mechanical strength rather than to achieve uniform conductivity, consistent electrical conductivity throughout the material is not guaranteed. Machining CFRP is also more difficult than standard resin grades, and as a result, machining costs are higher.

The dust generated during machining is a health hazard: inhaling it can damage the lungs, and skin contact followed by friction can cause abrasions.

  • Uniform conductivity is not guaranteed

  • Higher machining costs than standard grades
