What You Need to Know About PTFE
2026/5/15
Key Takeaways
PTFE is a high-performance engineering plastic known for its superior sliding properties and non-stick surface.
PTFE has a water absorption rate of 0.00%, making it completely waterproof.
PTFE remains stable and maintains its strength from as low as -250°C (-418°F) up to +260°C (+500°F).
Features of PTFE
PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is a high-performance plastic distinguished by its exceptional sliding capabilities and non-stick characteristics. With an incredibly low dynamic friction coefficient of just 0.04, its smooth surface delivers outstanding performance in sliding components.
Furthermore, PTFE offers excellent thermal stability, with a continuous operating temperature of 260°C (500°F), while retaining its strength even in cryogenic conditions down to -250°C (-418°F). Its molecular structure is highly resistant to oxidation, earning it a V-0 flame-retardant rating under UL94 standards. It is also highly water-repellent with a 0.00% absorption rate—it simply does not soak up moisture.
Superior sliding properties and wear resistance
Excellent heat and cold resistance
Zero water absorption
Outstanding chemical resistance
High electrical insulation
Inherently flame-retardant
PTFE Grades
In addition to the standard (virgin) grade, PTFE is available in several specialized formulations to enhance its mechanical performance:
Standard (Virgin) Grade
Glass Fiber Reinforced Grade
Graphite Reinforced Grade
Polyimide Blended Grade
Considerations for Material Selection
PTFE has a high coefficient of linear thermal expansion, meaning it expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes. To ensure parts fit perfectly during assembly, strict temperature control in storage and production areas is essential. Because PTFE is very soft and highly reactive to heat, achieving extreme dimensional precision is exceptionally challenging. Additionally, it tends to develop "burrs" during machining, which require expert skill and manual effort to remove properly.
High Thermal Sensitivity: Dimensions shift easily with temperature.
Machining Difficulty: Soft material makes precision and deburring a challenge.
