Difference Between Anodizing and Plating: Key Properties and Processes

Last updated : 2026/7/27

Key Takeaways

  • Electrolytic Role: Anodizing uses the anode, while plating uses the cathode.

  • Film Formation: Anodizing forms a film on both the surface and inside the material, while plating creates a separate metal layer on the surface only.

Overview

Anodizing and plating are two common surface treatments used for aluminum alloys to improve corrosion resistance and durability, but they differ greatly in how protective films are formed.

Anodizing

Anodizing is a surface treatment applied mainly to aluminum alloys. It creates a thick anodic oxide film through electrolytic treatment with the product as the anode.

  • Improves corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance.

  • Can be used decoratively through color anodizing.

  • Forms an oxide film both on the surface and inside the material, giving it strong protective qualities.

Because anodizing penetrates into the material, re-anodizing requires removing the existing film to avoid thinning. Anodized coatings are also brittle, so bending or post-processing the material can cause cracks in the film.

Plating

Plating is a process in which the target material is used as the cathode. Metal ions in the electrolyte are reduced and deposited, creating a surface layer of another metal.

  • Forms a protective layer on the outside of the material only.

  • The process differs fundamentally from anodizing because it applies a separate metal coating rather than forming an oxide layer within the material itself.
