How to Remove and Prevent Rust on Metal

2025/9/25

Metal rusts when exposed to air and moisture. Even “rust-resistant” metals like stainless steel can corrode over time in harsh environments. If left untreated, rust can spread deeper into the material, weakening it and making it brittle. Proper maintenance is essential to protect metal products.

This article explains the causes of rust, effective ways to remove it, and methods to prevent corrosion.

Why Metals Rust

Metals are refined from ores, which naturally combine with oxygen and other elements. Rust is simply the metal reacting with oxygen in an attempt to return to this more stable, natural state. Because oxygen is always present in the air, this reaction can occur at any time, especially when moisture is added. This process is what we commonly call rusting.

How to Remove Rust

Some light rust can be removed with commercial cleaners. However, rust can spread over time and penetrate deeper into the metal, making it harder to remove. In those cases, scrubbing with a brush, stainless steel pad, or sandpaper may be necessary.

Metals like stainless steel or aluminum form a natural oxide layer that protects against corrosion. Scrubbing can damage this layer. While it usually regenerates quickly, if the surface is exposed to a rust-promoting environment (humidity, saltwater, or acidic conditions) during that time, new rust may form.

For heavier red rust (iron oxide), applying citric acid on a cloth can dissolve the rust. Warmed vinegar soaks may also loosen and help remove rust.

How to Prevent Rust

Rust prevention starts with keeping metal surfaces clean. Dust, sand, and other contaminants can damage the protective oxide layer and encourage corrosion.

Chloride ions, in particular, not only damage the oxide layer but also disrupt its regeneration, causing the protective layer to fail which makes the metal more susceptible to rust. In most cases, wiping the surface with a soft cloth or sponge to remove debris helps prevent rust. For stubborn dirt, use neutral detergent or soapy water, followed by rinsing and thoroughly drying.

Avoid harsh chemicals such as strong acids, alkalis, chlorine, and organic solvents.

For added protection, surface treatments such as electropolishing can smooth the metal surface, making it harder for contaminants to stick and reducing the risk of rust.
