Inconel CNC Machining For Beginner's

Inconel CNC Machining For Beginner's

2025/9/25

Inconel® is a nickel-based alloy known for its exceptional strength and corrosion resistance in high-temperature environments. It also contains carbon, iron, chromium, and other elements. Inconel retains its strength at temperatures up to around 700°C (1292°F), making it ideal for aerospace, manufacturing, and other specialized industries. However, it is classified as a difficult-to-machine material, posing challenges for cutting and CNC machining.

Characteristics of Inconel

High Heat Resistance

Inconel maintains its strength at temperatures around 700°C (1292°F). In contrast, stainless steel typically withstands only up to 500°C (932°F). While most metals lose significant strength at high temperatures, Inconel resists this degradation, classifying it as a super heat-resistant alloy. This property makes it ideal for aerospace and industrial applications exposed to extreme heat.

High Corrosion Resistance

Inconel resists corrosion even in high-temperature environments up to approximately 1000°C (1832°F). Chromium and other elements form a protective oxide film on its surface, similar to stainless steel. It also resists water, acids, alkalis, and other corrosive agents, minimizing rust and degradation in harsh conditions.

Difficult to Machine

Inconel is challenging to machine due to work hardening, which is where hardness increases when external force is applied. Additionally, its low thermal conductivity concentrates heat on cutting tools, accelerating wear and complicating machining. Machining Inconel requires careful control of cutting conditions, tools, and cooling methods.
